The 52" 52HMX94 is part of Toshiba's acclaimed Cinema Series line. It not only delivers an extraordinary picture, but is one of the few DLP (Digital Light Processing) big-screens with built-in reception capability for both over-the-air and cable HD programming. (For digital cable reception, you'll need to get a CableCARD from your local service provider.)
The 52HMX94 uses a proprietary system called TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine). It's based on Texas Instruments' HD2+ one of their most advanced DLP chips. It has the same 1280 x 720-pixel resolution as the popular HD2 chip, but this upgraded version delivers enhanced brightness and contrast. All non-HD signals are upconverted and enhanced by Toshiba's multi-step PixelPure video processing system, which optimizes resolution, contrast, and color. Signals are scaled to match the DLP chip's native 1280 x 720 (720p) resolution.
Another great Toshiba innovation is the dual-mode Radiance DC Lamp. The 120-watt high-brightness setting is for daytime use with ambient room light, while the 100-watt setting decreases brightness and increases contrast ratio for more cinematic nighttime viewing in a room with dimmed or darkened lights. (Tip: the 100-watt mode also extends lamp life.) The lamp's unique Instant Restart feature allows the TV to be turned on immediately after shutdown, unlike other lamp-based models.
The 52HMX94 is a pleasure to use, thanks in part to the free TV Guide On Screen interactive program guide. Cinema Series big-screens also include one of the most flexible and future-ready sets of A/V connections we've seen. In addition to two component video inputs, you'll find two HDMI digital A/V jacks (HDMI is quickly becoming the connection of choice for high-end A/V). And for expanded playback and recording options, you get two IEEE 1394 "DTVLink" ports for easy pushbutton HD recording with Toshiba's Symbio digital video recorder.
