Panasonic DMR-ES10S Key Features

Multi-Format Recording and Playback
The Panasonic DMR-ES10S DVD Recorder can record DVD-RAM, DVD-R, +R and DVD-RW discs; and can play back DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-Audio, DVD-video, Video CD, Audio CD (CD-DA) and CD-R/RW MP3 or JPEG formatted discs.

The ultimate DVD Recorder, a DVD-RAM recorder offers multi-format data compatibility that lets you record TV programs, still pictures and MPEG4 images. And in addition to superb DVD-RAM recording/playback, you're ready to enjoy DVD-RW and DVD+R recording/playback, and improved compatibility with DVD Players and PCs for a trouble-free, secure recording environment. Naturally, playback of all DVD formats is also possible, so you don't have to worry about whether your DIGA can play back everything in your current video library What's more, a DIGA lets you take advantage of handy entertainment possibilities.

One-Second Quick Start for Recording
Thanks to high-speed quick start, both the hard disk drive and the DVD disc are ready to record just one second after switching on the power. Being able to record almost immediately means you'll never miss the scenes you want to catch.
High Picture Quality With New DIGA Engine
Virtual Multi Encode System
Improved horizontal resolution in LP mode renders images twice as sharp as last year's models, delivering up to 500 lines. The Virtual Multi Encode System enables LP mode recording with the same 500 lines (DI) of horizontal resolution as that in the SP and XP modes. This is double the horizontal resolution compared to the 250 lines (1/2 DI) of conventional LP mode recording. Thanks to this, you can enjoy viewing extended recordings -- 4 hours for single-sided DVD-RAM/R; / 8 hours for double-sided DVD-RAM -- with exceptionally detailed images and twice the picture quality of previous models. The Virtual Multi Encode System achieves this by virtually encoding multiple aspects of a scene, such as detail and movement, while selecting the encoding system that assures optimum picture quality.

12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter
A new 12-bit analog-to-digital converter provides high bit, high rate sampling to convey even subtle nuances and produce smooth, beautiful recordings with astounding depth. Using the 12-bit Analog-to-Digital converter provides an extremely dense 4,096 steps of gradation. Compared to the 1,024 steps possible with a regular 10-bit Analog-to-Digital converter this enables recording with four times as many smooth steps. The result is faithful reproduction of the details in both the bright and dark parts of scenes, so that for the first time you can see everything there is to see.

16-Hour Audio/Video Recording to DVD-RAM Discs
This unique recorder allows you to digitally record high-quality, MPEG2 video on DVD-RAM or DVD-R media. The DMR-ES10S is engineered to take full advantage of the DVD-RAM format's capabilities, such as simultaneous playback and recording. DVD-RAM provides a single format for computer and video-based applications. With its vast storage capacity, incredible speed, memory, exceptional picture and sound quality, and writing/erasing/rewriting capability, DVD-RAM is highly adaptive to the expanding digital media environment.

You can record favorite video recordings onto removable DVD-RAM discs and instantly access favorite scenes without searching, fast-forwarding or rewinding. As an optical media format, DVD-RAM enjoys huge advantages over tape media, including random access, extraordinary picture quality, and multiple disc (DVD/CD) playback compatibility. And unlike tape, the format boasts superior rewritability, allowing you to rewrite to each disc thousands of times. The DMR-ES10S has a super-fast data transfer rate of 22.16 Mbps, thereby making simultaneous recording and playback possible.

The DMR-ES10S features Extended Recording Time. In EP mode, it can record up to 8 hours on a single-sided 4.7GB DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc, and up to 16 hours on a double-sided 9.4GB DVD-RAM disc! You can also choose 6-hour/12-hour EP Mode for higher sound quality.

VHS Refresh Dubbing to DVD
When connecting a VCR and DIGA to record VHS videotape images onto a DVD disc, the Time Base Corrector helps reduce jitter and performs signal conversion to create a stable signal. At the same time, 3D DNR detects and virtually eliminates randomly generated noise and color rregularities to help minimize flicker. Thanks to these two technologies, the tape input signal is automatically detected and optimum processing is performed to provide an easy way to even more beautiful digital pictures.
Direct Navigator
Find desired programs fast. Just press the Direct Navigator button to display thumbnails of all the programs on a disc. Then select the one you want and press ENTER. It's that easy.
Audio/Video Recording to DVD-R Discs
The DMR-ES10S DVD Video Recorder can also record onto DVD-R discs, so you can enjoy playback of these recordings on most conventional DVD players.

DVD-R discs may not be able to play on some DVD players, depending on the player, the DVD-R disc and the condition of the recording.

Time SlipTM Playback Functions
  • Chasing Playback -- This innovative feature lets you view a program that you're currently recording from any point that's already been recorded, while continuing to record the live program in progress. So, you no longer have to wait for the entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end.
  • Simultaneous Recording and Playback -- Because data transfer is at a super-fast rate of 22.16Mbps, simultaneous recording and playback are possible with the DMR-ES10S. So, you can record a live TV program while watching any other program that's been previously recorded on the same disc!
  • Time Slip Button -- Just press the Time Slip button once during recording to start playing back the scene recorded 30 seconds earlier. You can also use the cursor keys to return to any point from 1 to 360 minutes earlier.
Selectable Recording Modes
You can set the DMR-ES10S to a variety of recording modes, each depending on average bit rate. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP and SP mode provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording.
Recording Mode Recording Times
4.7GB disc 9.4GB disc
XP Recording Mode about 1 hour about 2 hours
SP Recording Mode about 2 hours about 4 hours
LP Recording Mode about 4 hours about 8 hours
EP Recording Mode about 6/8* hours about 12-16* hours

* In EP mode you can select either 6 hours or 8 hours of recording. The sound quality in 6-hour EP mode is higher quality than in 8-hour EP mode.

Flexible Recording
In addition, the FR (flexible recording) mode determines the most appropriate bit rate to fit a user-specified time slot (60 to 360 minutes) for timer recording. Flexible Recording starts before the recording commences, by determining the recording time and the disc's available storage space automatically, so you don't have to worry about you recordings being interrupted.
CD-R/RW, MP3 Playback
You can enjoy listening to CDs that you make, since Panasonic DVD recorders enable playback of CD-R and CD-RW discs. They can also play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R/RW formatted discs. Use the Audio Navigation Menu to view and quickly search these MP3 files on screen.
One-Touch Record and Play
The One-Touch Record feature seeks out empty space on a disc before it begins recording, eliminating the possibility of accidentally recording over a previously-recorded program. With the One-Touch Play feature, blank portions of the disc are automatically skipped, saving you the need to manually search for the desired program.
Play List Function; Easy Video Editing
Lets the user perform non-linear video editing and create custom play lists of favorite scenes on a disc. The user can mark the cut-in and cut-out points for up to 999 desired scenes. These are displayed as thumbnail images on-screen, allowing the user to create a playlist. Multiple playlists (up to 99) can be stored in memory, so the same disc can be used to create up to 99 different scenarios. This function is also convenient for jumping directly to particular scenes. Because the order of scenes can be changed at will, and unwanted scenes can be cut, the user can perform simple editing of home video recordings or create original personal "programs" such as sports event highlights.
Progressive Scanning Output for Outstanding Reproduction (Playback)
Progressive scanning doubles the scan lines of an interlaced signal (from 480i to 480p) by scanning all 525 lines in 1/60 of a second for each pass. The higher-density video signal creates film-like DVD images extraordinarily close to the way they originally appeared in the cinema - with rich detail, extraordinary depth of field, and precise color reproduction. With the rising popularity of high definition televisions and their ability to accept and reproduce a progressive scan DVD picture, Panasonic's line of DVD progressive players are positioned to take full advantage of this growing format.
Rapid Random Access Recording and Playback
Say goodbye to the rewind/fast-forward shuffle. Unlike videotapes, DVD-RAM discs let you jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, the DMR-ES10S DVD Video Recorder can record data on the available space throughout the rest of the disc. There's no more wasted time finding a place to start recording, or the problem of accidentally recording over desired material.
Incredible Storage Capacity
Using the DMR-ES10S, you can record up to 12 hours of video on Panasonic's 2-sided, 9.4GB DVD-RAM discs. These discs can be played back on a DVD-RAM compatible DVD player -- such as Panasonic's DVD-RP91 or DVD-H2000 -- or on a PC or laptop computer equipped with DVD-RAM playback capability. You can also edit your videos on a multi-media computer with video editing/production software.

To play back a 9.4 GB DVD-RAM disc on a DVD player or on a PC or laptop computer, playback device must have either a DVD-RAM drive capable of reading 9.4 GB DVD-RAM discs or compatible DVD-ROM drive capable of reading 9.4GB DVD-RAM discs, and must have Video Recording Format support installed. Operating systems currently supported are Windows 95 and higher and Mac OS 7.5 and higher.

DVD-RAM and DVD-R Media
Space-Saving Storage
A DVD-RAM disc takes up only about a third of the space of a VHS cassette, so your disc collection won't cramp your style. The ideal media for long-term storage of your valuable video images, DVD-RAM preserves quality over time, and also permits overwriting as desired.
DVD-RAM Compatibility with PC Applications
The DVD-RAM disc format is supported by major hardware and media manufacturers, and is thus hailed as the new "bridge format" for compatibility with audio/video and personal computing applications. You can take your DVD-RAM disc out of its protective cartridge, and play it back on a PC equipped with a 4.7GB/9.4GB DVD-RAM drive or DVD-ROM drive that's compatible with 4.7GB/9.4 GB DVD-RAM. With the proper software, you can also use your PC to edit your DVD-RAM recordings. And, since the discs the DMR-ES10S uses are DVD-RAM, you can use them to backup your computer data, as well. Thanks to DVD-RAM, you can record, store, and play back secure data in more ways than ever before.
Advanced MPEG2 Encoding Using Real-Time VBR (Variable Bit Rate) Technology
Panasonic has combined two encoding technologies -- Real time VBR and Visibility Modulation Technology -- to provide MPEG2 recording with superb picture quality. Here's how it works: Real Time VBR adjusts the bit rate according to video signal complexity, in order to optimize the compression ratio. At the same time, Visibility Modulation Technology reduces compression for the most noticeable parts of each signal while it filters out unimportant data to raise compression in other areas. This combination helps assure incredible picture quality for your preferred DVD-RAM recording mode.
Input TBC and 3D Y/C Separation
Input TBC (time base corrector) removes jitter from the input signal, while 3D Y/C separation circuitry precisely separates the luminance (Y) and chrominance (C) portions of the video signal to minimize dot crawl and color smearing caused by interference between the video signal's Y and C color subcomponents. These functions are particularly effective when recording from analog video sources such as a conventional VCR and camcorder. Combined with the 3D DNR applied during playback, the result can be a surprising restoration of image quality from old videocassettes.

It's quick and easy to restore older videotapes with the DMR-ES10S. You can record directly from your VCR (or from television). The input TBC circuit and advanced 3D Y/C separation refine dot interference and jitter. Combined with 3D Digital Noise Reduction, the result is a higher picture quality on DVD-RAM than on your original recordings. Even the past looks brighter on DVD-RAM!

Bilingual Recording (DVD-RAM Only)
With the main and sub audio channels of sound multiplex broadcasting programs can be recorded.
QuickView (x1.3)
Panasonic DVD Recorders are able to play back at 1.3 times the normal speed*, complete with sound, so you can quickly check the contents of a recorded program when you don't have time to watch it at normal speed. This feature can even be used during Chasing Playback.**

* Cannot be used with programs recorded in the linear PCM format or with DVD-R or DVD-Video discs.
**Cannot be used when recording in XP or FP modes.

CPRM Recording Capability
Panasonic DVD Recorders are ready for future Content Protection for Recordable Media required programs that permit the recording of only first generation copies.
Create Your Own DVD With Thumbnails
When you record programs onto a DVD-R disc, and then finalize and load the disc, both the title and a thumbnail image from each program are displayed. A quick look is all you'll need to see the disc's contents. You can even choose which scene from each program is displayed as a thumbnail.
Chapter Preview
Chapter preview serves as a tool to refresh your memory about a movie you haven't seen all the way through. If you keep the disc in the player and press PLAY again, chapter preview automatically shows you the first three seconds of each previously viewed chapter. The unit will proceed with normal play once it reaches the position where you left off.
